Cameroon and Afghanistan Designated for Temporary Protected Status.

On April 15, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Cameroon will be designated for TPS (Temporary Protected Status) for 18 months. Cameroonian nationals already residing in the United States as of April 14, 2022, will be eligible for TPS. TPS protects individuals from deportation and allows eligible persons to apply for work authorization. This TPS designation is due to the severe and widespread humanitarian crisis in Cameroon that has resulted from violence between government forces and armed separatists groups, and a rise in attacks from the extremist group Boko Haram. Cameroon is the fifth country that has been designated for TPS in 2022, including Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, and Afghanistan. TPS was announced for Afghanistan on March 16, as the Taliban continues to impose control on the country and Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) commits attacks on civilians, creating a humanitarian crisis of internal displacement, collapsing infrastructure, and human rights abuses.
